Apple Mummy

I have made an apple mummy because we have been reading about Ancient Egypt lots lately. I wanted to see how they made the mummies, so we made our own. We used salt, bi-carb soda, a bandage, and an apple to do it. If you would like to do it this is what you need to do.
  1. Peel one apple
  2. Remove the core and cut it in half
  3. Carve a face into each half (my Mum did that for me)
  4. Put one half of the apple on a plate and set it aside
  5. Put the other half in a bowl with bi-carb and salt, coat it very well
  6. Wrap the salty bi-carb apple in a bandage very tightly and put it on the plate near the other half
  7. In  one week, unwrap the the mummy apple and see how different they are

The brown apple is the one that was mummified. It stayed the same size, the other one shrank lots. It got all shrivelled and yucky, but not the mummified one. I found it very very interesting. I imagine what my apple would look like if I put it in a sarcophagus and left it there for 3000 years!

Why I Like Unschooling

My sister used to go to school. She says she likes unschooling much more than school. I think I do too, even though I have never been to school. I get to learn about the things that are really interesting!

I am interested in maths, science, and history, and I have read some good books like The Big Book of Tashi, Old Tom, and Zombies on The Loose. Today I read Bigfoot and Other Monsters.

Today we did a science experiment with purple cabbage, bicarb soda, and vinegar. First you boil the cabbage until the water goes purple then you collect the water. Then you add some bicarb soda to it and it turns blue. Then you add some vinegar to it and it fizzes lots and turns pink.

This happens because the purple cabbage water changes when something is alkaline or acidic. It turns blue with the alkaline bicarb soda, and pink with the vinegar. It fizzes because vinegar and bicarb soda create a chemical reaction when you mix them. It was fun and interesting!

Here are some photos we took.

this is the purple cabbage water

when we added the bicarb soda it went this colour
When we added the vinegar it fizzed like crazy and went everywhere!

It was pinker than it looks in this photo.

Shark Fin Soup

I am very interested in sharks. I have been reading about shark fin soup. Shark  fin soup is  $70  dollars.   Shark  finning   is  in many   places in  Asia . Some people think the soup is nice but others think it is horrible.

Shark  fin fisherpeople do  not earn  much  money but  the  people  who  sell  it  are  rich.

This     is   shark    fin   soup .

Here  are  some  fins  drying  in   the  sun. Look how many there are.

To make the soup they use the first dorsal fin and sometimes the pectoral fin. They catch the shark and cut off its fins then they throw it back into the sea where it dies. Sometimes they use other parts of the shark too.

Sharks are endangered because of fishing. If sharks become extinct the oceans are in a lot of trouble. We need to save the sharks, not kill them!

Honey and Mustard Chicken

My Dad is a chef. He has a cooking blog called Dad's Cooking.  I helped him to make a recipe for his blog. I made Honey and Mustard Chicken.

It was delicious! First I put the chicken in the frying pan. Then I grabbed the honey and mustard and put some in with the chicken. Then I stirred it and let it cook for twenty minutes.

I cut up vegetables and steamed them in the thermomix. I put salt and some butter on them when they were ready.

If you want to know how to cook it you can CLICK HERE. I think most kids will enjoy it.

How I got into archery

I first got into archery when I watched  Robin Hood. I also watched the Hobbit and the Hunger Games, and I wanted to try it so I made one with my Dad.

We made our bow and arrow from some wood we found in the bush and some string. We glued feathers to the arrows.

I Like Zombies

I read this book last night. I like reading about zombies.    In  the book Zombies on the Loose there's a legend of  two English men who died in the year 1090. That night the men were seen on a hill carrying coffins on their backs.

In Africa there is a religion called Bokor. The Bokor believe they can make zombies. They trick the person into eating a magic powder, then when they die, they dig them up and cast a spell on them to make them into zombies. The zombie eats the plant zombie cucumber.

I think this is a very good book and I liked reading it. I think that it is good for people who are eight and like zombies!
